Chroma is an innovative product designed by 3-form in collaboration with Bayer Material Science, specifically to be repurposed and re-finished as good as new. This innovative new process is called Aura infusion, and produces a palette of colours infused into solid resin panels. In the infusion process, finished plastic parts are immersed in or sprayed with a mostly aqueous solution containing dye until the desired colour intensity is achieved. The colour is infused into the panels at a depth of 250 microns. After a short period of time, the parts are removed from the dye solution, rinsed with water to remove excess dye solution from the surface and finally dried to produce a market-ready product. When the need arises to produce a part with a different colour, the spent solution can be treated to recover both dye-free solvent and most of the unused dye. The regenerated dye-free solvent can be used to formulate a new colour solution, thus being used over and over again. The refinishing process prevents the material from entering the waste stream and allows each panel to be multi-cycled into new architectural installations.
