Sustainable Building Materials & Architectural Hardware

How did your product contribute to the success and innovation of the Alice Tully Theater?

3form integrates the latest technologies in material development, providing unique materials that help to achieve aesthetic intent, performance criteria and cost constraints. We demonstrate proof-of-concept by fabricating prototypes while testing materials and our system’s performance with in-house testing equipment. This allows architects and designers to confidently propose innovative solutions to their clients.

Example:
Alice Tully Hall translucent wood— The 3form Advanced Technology Group was challenged with capturing real wood in a non-planar, structural panel and incorporated the element of translucency. The material had to meet several performance criteria for the interior of Alice Tully Hall including flammability performance, acoustic aspects and structural requirements. In collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the 3form ATG developed the technology to manufacture this classic solid wood surfacing with contemporary translucency, and achieved design intent, conformed to building requirements, and mitigated project risk.

What is the role of sustainable products like yours in the development of today’s leading architectural ideas?

3form continues to innovate and expand its offerings of aesthetically refined low impact products. Our mission is to design beautiful materials that demand less from the natural world and are kind to people. Never satisfied, we are continually developing ways to further reduce the impact of our products and the way in which we produce them. We manufacture materials that contain high levels of recycled content, are GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified, support artisans and global communities, never contain PVC and can be reclaimed at the end-of-life. Additionally, 3form does extensive human-factor testing and commits substantial resources to improve and create new products that enhance the quality of human life, including flammability, toxicity, insulation performance for thermally efficient buildings, Safety Impact testing for clean air and building quality and we always design with a concern for reuse and recycling.

What are the latest innovative materials you are working on?

3form is always creating innovative materials. Most recently, 3form unveiled V3. V3 is a technology enhancement that incorporates the addition of photovoltaic modules to 3form exterior (XT) platform materials. The V3 line is designed to harness solar power while allowing a more complex geometry than can be achieved with rigid solar modules in glass.

3form panels with V3 can be can be curved, provided in a myriad of colors and offer extreme impact performance in comparison to glass PV panels. V3 is a very important technology that allows 3form materials to be incorporated into a plethora of Design Integrated Photovoltaic (DIPV) applications. The inspiration for V3 was fostered by the vision of Lundberg DesignÕs award winning DIPV Program with Clear Channel Outdoor with the San Francisco bus shelters.

As with many 3formÕs boundary-breaking projects, 3form clients help to set the pace for innovative products and solutions, which we then work to offer in commercialized programs.

How can vendors and material developers help to push the boundaries of what is possible in the world of design and architecture?

The Advanced Technology Group at 3form specifically focuses on working with architects and designers to understand and bring to reality non-traditional solutions that push the boundaries of commercial availability. We integrate our process at an early stage of the design process and focus on finding solutions that perfectly balance the proverbial triangle of aesthetics, performance and cost.
