02. Reclaimed Agricultural Fiber Board

Kirei Board
Clean and Beautiful Contemporary Design
Kirei (“key-ray”): a Japanese word embodying the qualities of “clean” and “beautiful.”
Constructed entirely from reclaimed agricultural fiber, Kirei Board is a strong, lightweight, durable, environmentally friendly substitute for wood-usable in furniture, cabinetry, casework, and interior design elements.  Kirei Board helps reduce forest clear-cutting and indoor air pollution while bringing a new element of beauty to modern interior design.

Kirei Board
Kirei Board is manufactured from the raw stalks of sorghum, an edible grass grown around the world.  After harvesting the grain for food, the stalks are compressed, washed, and woven into sheets.  These sheets are then stacked and heat-pressed with a formaldehyde-free adhesive to create blocks which are cut to the desired size.

Workability
Kirei Board has excellent dimensional stability and screw holding power, resisting warping and allowing solid attachment of cabinet hardware.  Kirei Board can be finished with nearly any water-, oil-, or urethane-based paint, lacquer or stain, using standard woodworking techniques. Available in 910mm x 1820mm (3’x6’) sheets with thicknesses of 6mm (.24”) , 10mm (.39”), 20mm (.79”), and 30mm (1.18”).  Kirei USA now offers a variety of environmentally friendly materials including Bamboo plyboard and an LDF and MDF wheatboard.

Environmental Benefits
Kirei Board reduces forest clear-cutting, air pollution and landfill use.  The sorghum stalks used in the manufacture of Kirei Board are a rapidly renewable resource left after the edible portion of the plant is harvested.
Until now, these stalks have been discarded or burned, adding to landfill waste and pollution.  Kirei Board helps reduce this waste and ease deforestation by substituting for wood.
In addition, Kirei Board is made using a non-toxic adhesive that does not emit toxic formaldehyde.
Kirei Board can be an excellent way to help your projects qualify for LEED credit for environmentally friendly construction.

04. Glass+Metal+Art

Glassworks
Fox Fire is an innovative resource for creative solutions in glass.  The latest addition to their glass techniques is a 3-dimensional metal veneered surface.  Combining the sustainability of glass with the durability of genuine metal, Fox Fire has brought a truly unique product to the architectural market.

This innovative technique is exceptionally visual and remarkably tactile.  Molten metal seems to be cast into the surface of the glass.  Glass panels embossed with metal veneers highlight designs that are natural and organic, or graphic and linear.

Glass in and of itself is an enduring material, as is metal.  The combination of the two produces a timeless, artistic result that will not fade, yellow, crack, or peel.  The addition of laminates to the glass creates a safety product and provides a broad selection of color.  The metal finishes are available in copper, bronze, iron, steel, and aluminum.  As they are genuine metal, they patina like metal and can be finished to your specification.

05. Recycled Content

ethos™
C&A’s ethos™, is an evolutionary carpet backing. Ethos™ is a non-chlorinated, high-performance backing for commercial carpet that provides all of the durability attributes of PVC.  Moreover, ethos™ is made from an abundant waste source - the polyvinyl butyral (PVB) film that is recovered when automotive windshields are recycled. Until now, there has been no commercial use for this material that accounts for millions of pounds of landfill waste. Ethos™ represents an exciting alternative to PVC, EVA, polyurethane, and polyolefin carpet backings.

•Extremely low VOC emissions
•More than 76% post consumer recycled content in the secondary backing
•A guaranteed minimum 30% post-consumer recycled content for the entire product regardless of style, including a minimum of 30% post-consumer content
•A permanent closed cell cushion for durability and lifelong resilience
•Molecularly bonded seams
•Molecularly bonded repairs
•Better comfort underfoot than conventional cushion or non-cushion backings
•Better rollability than alternative cushion backings
•Better flexibility (drape) for ease of installation and positive conformity to the floor

And, ethos™ is 100% recyclable today, with existing programs and equipment. Tandus’ recycling program is NOT based on future expectations or future capabilities. Tandus not only can recycle 100% of the product today but can also recycle it back into new carpeting.

About Tandus

06. Ply-bending

Opera Verde
The designs employ the use of ply-bending as one of the most sustainable of processes and as it is a new medium, the possibilities are vast. We are building a new aesthetic for ply-bending, using it in combination with recycled and other sustainable resources. We seek unlikely materials with potential for richness, which leave little impact on the biosphere. Our ultimate goal is to product affordable designs, simple and sophisticated, whose souls tell tales of sustainable beauty.

Ply-bending
•Ply-bending yields 8-10 times more usable wood from a log than solid lumber.
•The energy consumption to convert wood from a raw material to a finished product is miniscule when compared to other industrial materials
•Currently in the United States, hardwood forests grow roughly 82% more volume every year than is harvested, lost to fire, wind, insects and disease.
•Wood possesses the smallest carbon footprint of comparable structural materials.

Sustainable Issues
•European beech is sourced from FSC certified forests and is renewable
•Finishes are waterbourne in lieu of VOC solvent based finishes
•Adhesives used for laminating the ply-bent stock is PVA in lieu of using the industry standard urea/formaldehyde.
